Ninety years ago the Brits, the French, and the Americans humiliated China in the Opium Wars. As tribute, they forced China to give up control of certain key cities and ports. Shanghai is the greatest of these. She’s the fifth largest port in the world, and the largest “freeport”: No passport or visa is required to enter Shanghai.

Refugees, mercenaries, adventurers, spies, criminals and millionaires have been pouring into the city ever since. She’s fat with trade, opium and vice, and run by a corrupt council of foreign powers based in the opulent “International Settlement”.
